Devices that generate light from electricity and are quite important in warming dark areas are referred to as light bulbs. There exists various types of light bulbs with the common ones being LED light bulbs and compact fluorescent (CFs) light bulbs.LED light bulbs use LED being solid-state lighting devices that are capable of fitting in standard screw-in connections. LEDs are basically light emitting diodes utilized in light bulbs to produce light. The bulbs produce visible light by the use of a semiconductor device every time an electric current pass through it. Fluorescent bulbs filled with argon gas and a small amount of mercury are employed for use in compact fluorescent light bulbs. When an electric current pass through it, the cathode heats up sending out electrons which hit the argon and mercury. Mercury once excited produces ultra-violet light which is not visible by the human eyes. The fluorescent lamb is coated with the phosphor which when the UV light passes through it emits visible light. Mercury is a heavy metal being utilized by CFs light bulbs and very harmful to the human health hence the CFs light bulbs are not environmentally friendly.
The energy efficiency of the LED and CFs light bulbs varies considerably with the LED light bulbs being more efficient. Led light bulbs start lighting immediately once switched on without requiring time for warming up to generate light. Durability of LED light bulbs is key as they are not made out of glass other they are made of plastics which is highly durable. LED light bulbs are capable of lighting in all weather conditions including cold weather. CFs light bulbs utilize a lot of energy in lighting and are also not long lasting making them cost ineffective.
Wattage of an LED light is not a major consideration but what should be keenly looked into is the lumen. Measuring the energy amount a light bulb draws is wattage units while measuring the brightness a light bulb produces is done by lumen units. CFs light bulbs draw much more energy than LED light bulbs for the same number of lumens hence LEDs are more energy efficient. Choosing an LED light bulb to purchase requires one to decide the color needed from the wide array of color ranges and where the bulb is to be used, The measurement of color temperature is kelvins and the lower the number, the yellower the color. Converting alternating current from power supply to direct current usable by LED light bulbs requires an LED driver.
LED light bulbs which are viable for even larger scale lighting have been developed recently and have well and improved efficiency, output, and cost. LED light bulbs should be checked for compatibility for use in fixtures during installation as heat build-up can cause light bulb failure or even fire.
