Originally, these people inhabited West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Kentucky but nowadays, majorities of the people reside in Ohio and Oklahoma. This particular ethnic group like distancing itself from war and therefore, whenever there were attacked, they moved from that place and settled in a new location. Due to the constant relocation, the Shawnees only set up temporary living shelters. The not fully grown trees were used to establish a framework upon which the house would be based on, while the barks were used to hold the thick grass that was cut from the fields. The thick grass was used to cover the sides plus also the roof and its main use in addition to providing privacy was to help with the conservation of heat in the shelter.
They had no unique way of dressing as compared to the other types of Indians in the States and they, therefore, wore the same. As a way of living, they practiced farming, fishing and hunting. The strong men were the one who went hunting while the women were left to take care of their homes and also to do farming. Primarily, these individuals dealt with the farming of corn aside from the fact that they also dealt with others.
These people only got to cut their hair when they were heading for a fight and that is also the only time that they got to wipe their face paint. The oldest people in the community held storytelling sessions with the young ones so that they could educate them about their origin and also their values as a community.
